FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A: After your top has been produced to fit your particular needs for size, shape, wood species, edge profile, and finish. It is important to maintain the finish for long lasting beauty. With a Waterlox® tung oil finish, one application annually should be perfect, more if you desire. With a mineral oil finish, several more applications are needed, especially at first. Maybe, twice a month for the first two months and then once a month, afterwards. These applications of mineral oil can be heavy. With a catalyzed conversion varnish finish, no maintenance is necessary. You may clean and polish with a product such as Pledge® .
Q: What surface finish is recommended?
A: We recommend the Waterlox® tung oil finish where there is food prep. It is easily maintained and repaired. We recommend the catalyzed conversion varnish for non-food prep areas and situations like an upper bar, desk, and a bathroom vanity. There is still the old dependable stand-by of mineral oil. This is good in a food prep area. For any questions regarding our finishes call our Customer Call Line 1-336-983-9905.
Q: Can I use my top as a work surface?
A: Your top has been designed to be used as a working surface. We do recommend the use of a wooden cutting board, made of a matching wood species or a hard rock maple, and that can be supplied by your dealer.
Q: Is bacteria formation a concern with my wood top?
A: Recent studies at the University of Wisconsin show that unhealthy bacteria survive on artificial cutting surfaces, but solid wood tops contain natural enzymes that fight bacteria.
Q: Can I incorporate the use of a sink in my solid wood top design?
A: Absolutely. We encourage the use of sinks, even undermounts, and show this design in our literature. As a general rule, we give the sink a negative reveal. This is much more clean and sanitary. We seal the wood around the sinks, so there are no problems. We also drill faucet holes at no extra charge. When fabricating tops with sinks and faucets we always need the necessary information.
